More About Deborah Boyd

I took my first cruise in 1981, more than 30 years ago. It was on the NCL Skyward and I won it in a contest.  We were both poor college students whose families lived in other states. Without enough money to go home for the holidays, a free cruise was a godsend. We decided to take a weeklong Christmas cruise.

Not only were we the youngest people on board, we were the poorest. Our tablemates and fellow cruisers owned steel mills in St. Louis and casinos in Reno. Cruising back then was very expensive and reserved for the more affluent. Fortunately, the seniors got a kick out of us. When I saw 80 pieces of silverware and didn’t know what to do with any of it, they sweetly provided instructions.

I was hooked.

A decade later, I was the cruise editor for a travel trade publication. The average age of my fellow passengers was probably 35. By now, Carnival had popularized mass market cruising and younger people and families were beginning to give it a try.

I was taking three and four-night cruises with people who didn’t mind spending the night in a disco and staying up until the wee hours of the morning. I fit in.

As I grew older, I no longer fit in: I changed; my needs changed; my life changed. All the cruises I’ve taken in the past ten years didn’t suit my needs and I became increasingly disenchanted with a vacation opportunity I once loved. It took a cruise longer than seven days to get me excited about cruising again. I was with people in my age group and it made all the difference.

My goal is to pass along everything I’ve learned – and continue to learn – to my fellow baby boomers. I hope you will reciprocate by posting your comments and adding to the conversation.

I live in Florida with my husband, author Marshall Boyd. In addition to this blog, I am a writer, artist, and videographer.

…  And  I love traveling!
